Furniture+Fireplaces
As with any other application, concrete has the ability to feed the imagination and the versatility to make design ideas into reality. We are always happy to work with clients and architects on distinctive and interesting ways of incorporating concrete into their designs. Please contact us to find out more.
Concrete Furniture
white+reid believes that nature sits well with concrete when the context is approached sympathetically. We create concrete furniture, such as garden benches and tables, using a wide range of aggregates, sands and pigments to produce beautiful tones that match or complement existing and new architectural interior / exterior features.
Concrete can also be used in conjunction with other materials to produce innovative fitted and freestanding furniture (e.g. polished concrete top for a wood veneered side cabinet / top for a bathroom vanity unit). Kitchen countertops can be set through glazing or walls to form exterior utility space, tables or barbecues, whilst countertops or similar features can transform seamlessly into concrete steps that allow free flowing movement from one exterior level to another.
Through careful planning of the formwork we can incorporate interesting patterns and textures into surface design and, by bringing out the natural vibrancy of external colours and tones, we are able to create a calm, contemporary feel to private and public external spaces.
Concrete Fireplaces
Concrete is a natural choice for creating new fireplaces or surrounds. Using pre-cast methods or in-situ trowelling for hearths, white+reid produce concrete fire surrounds from contemporary clean line minimalism, to curved sleek Art Deco stylisation and traditional Victorian splendour.
The choice of aggregates are fundamental to the identity of each piece. We can replicate natural stone such as limestone, incorporate granite for a terrazzo finish or be true to the natural earthy or industrial characteristics of traditional concrete.
Hearths can be hand-finished in the same way as a concrete countertop by seamlessly following the line of the fireplace. Raised hearths can continue around the room to produce shelving or a concrete top for fitted units in the recess either side of the chimney breast.
Incorporating the fireplace design within an in-situ wall design can create an immediate opening that can be used to house an open fire, thus creating a wonderful contemporary element of modern, sleek design.
