Lime

Used for brick mortar, wall rendering and plastering, natural non-hydraulic lime is an extremely versatile and flexible material. Over the years, the use of traditional lime has been replaced with modern gypsum plasters. However, lime remains particularly appropriate for older, solid brick wall construction and can be used for interior and exterior work.

The advantages of using lime over more modern materials are vast, for example, traditional lime allows walls to 'breathe' thus eliminating the many problems with damp associated with the unsympathetic use of modern plasters. Lime is also a good insulator, both thermally and acoustically. It is warm to the touch and gives any room a cosy, non-echo feel.

The benefits of traditional lime are now well recognised, with its use ever increasing and becoming more versatile. Recent advances in hydraulic lime have broadened the possibilities of using it in ground-supported slabs known as limecrete. Limecrete allows floors to 'breathe' and greatly reduces the problems associated with damp, whilst creating a warm feel and falling within current insulation requirements.

The beauty of choosing the application of lime to walls is that subsequent applications to achieve beautiful finishes are so varied. Tadelakt or Venetian Plaster can be applied to lime along with breathable paints such as Casein or soft distempers, limewash or breathable emulsions. All of these finishes contribute to the health of the home as well as giving a stunning, individual and lasting aesthetic to walls or ceilings.
